Of course I am pro-helmet. Too many reasons not to be. Mainly a spouse, 4 kids, 2 step-children, 4 grandkids, 2 more on the way yet this year, and hopefully more in the future... are just a few of my reasons for being Pro-Helmet. Not to mention my own personal track record of falling off every other time I mounted during the first 10 months of riding as an adult. (Thank goodness I didn't ride very often, but can you blame me?) Granted, it was almost always my fault, not my horse's, but a fall just the same.
I am just now typing this web-itorial, along with devoting a special page to Safety Helmets, because I can just now take the splint off my arm and type it. I was hunting and pecking one finger at a time, due to a broken arm which was the result of my horse falling on a straight flat section of trail, as safe as it gets, the Katy Trail outside of Sedalia. Nothing spooked him, no holes to fall into, no obstacles of any kind, and less than one hour into our ride, he just simply fell at a lope.
Being catapulted through the air by a 1200 pound missile launcher, who subsequently somersaulted and landed next to me, you have a few moments to think. Mostly I am thinking, "This is really going to be bad", along with a few other choice phrases I can not repeat on a family oriented website. The last thing I saw before I went airborne, was my friend's 6 year old daughter in front of me--- watching--- and I really wished this was not happening at that moment.
After the dust settled, I was thankful that I was able to feel the excruciating pain in my broken arm, because I knew my head had hit with some force, more than once. Even though my helmet had seen better days, I was glad that I was still able to have my head and my thinking capacity in tact, and I was glad and thankful that I still had the ability to feel pain. Nothing that an emergency surgery on a Sunday evening and a $10,000 hospital bill couldn't fix.
Even though wearing a helmet is pro-choice, there are too many documented reasons in support of being pro-helmet. In my search to find such information to share with you here on the website, I was amazed by some of my findings such as:
Most riding injuries occur with experienced riders.
Adults ages 25 or older account for at least 54 percent of hospital treated rider injuries.
Head injuries are associated with more than 60 percent of equestrian related deaths.
Nearly 62 percent of reported injuries occurred at home or on a farm.
Head injuries may result in lowered attention span, distractibility, memory loss, decreased in speed of mental process, learning disabilities, lowering the I.Q., and acceleration of aging process.
Now I don't know about you, but I can not afford any more loss or decreases in the ole noggin department, certainly not any that I can prevent.
I hope that each one of you will take the time to click through to some of the links contained on the Helmets page. If you’re one of those readers who do not wear a helmet, I hope some of these articles will make you step back and re-think your decision. I hope each one of you will ask yourself this one question... What is YOUR head worth?

Subject: Missouri State Parks eFriends
Newsletter - Special Issue July 2004
Welcome to a special issue of the electronic newsletter for Missouri State Park eFriends. In this issue, we are letting you know about a special opportunity to provide input about the state park system. I hope you will take this opportunity to let us know your thoughts. Doug Eiken, Director Missouri Department of Natural Resources Division of State Parks State Park System Seeks Public Input You can win a two-night stay at a Missouri state park by offering input on what should be included in the Missouri state park system. The Missouri Department of Natural Resources is seeking public input on identifying missing state parks and historic sites in the state park system. A 1992 plan identified notable gaps in the state park system where particular natural, cultural and recreational resources were either not represented or were underrepresented. The current survey seeks to determine how successful the division has been in filling these gaps and where gaps may still exist. The survey also provides opportunities to voice any opinions about the standards used to establish and maintain the state park system. Any potential new state park or historic site identified in the survey must meet these standards and adequate resources must be available to acquire and manage it. The survey will take approximately half an hour to complete. Participants who complete the survey are given the chance to enter a drawing to win a two-night stay for two people at a state park motel or cabin. If you are interested in participating in the survey, you can fill it out online at www.mostateparks.com/survey.

Show-Me Missouri Back Country Horsemen Attains State Status Durango, Colorado….Eldon Kriesel, Show-Me Missouri Back Country Horsemen Board Chairman returned from the Back Country Horsemen of America Annual National Meeting in Durango this past week with the news that SMMBCH was accepted as a state charter by a unanimous decision, having met all the requirements set forth in the bylaws of that organization. The Dade County Historical Society joined Show-Me BCH in March of this year to support their efforts and we encourage all regional trail riders to consider joining the organization which unites equestrians and gives us a political voice to be heard by our political leaders at various levels of government; as well as helping to coordinate our cooperative efforts with land management agencies throughout the state. SMMBCH has partnered with the Missouri Department of Conservation in it’s Adopt-A-Trail Program which has recently benefited the trails system at Hulston Mill Conservation Area with a workday to maintain trail system there. That workday was conducted by the Heart of the Ozarks Chapter of Show-Me Missouri Back Country Horsemen. Other workdays are planned at Hulston throughout the year. For more information on Show-Me Missouri Back Country Horsemen and the events revolving around their newly achieved state status, please visit them on the Web at: WWW.SHOWMEBCH.ORG .. Please Note: There will be a meeting of the Heart of the Ozarks Chapter of Show-Me Missouri Back Country Horsemen at Talbot Reserve on Saturday, May the 8th. at 11:00 A.M., at the stable barn which is located on Mo. Highway 96 just East of Highway 97intersection (see map below). Anyone in the Southwest Missouri region who is interested in becoming members of SMMBCH, or is seeking further information about membership is cordially invited to attend. We are planning an afternoon trail ride following the meeting so pack your lunch and bring your horses. [Our sincere thanks to Mark Hutchings of the Department of Conservation for permitting us to use the stable and arena for this meeting.]
Web Page Changes at RideHulston.Com Our web page address is about the only thing that remains the same at RideHulston.Com these days. We gave the page a new face lift to allow for faster page loading and to offer some new features to visitors. Traffic to our site has increased drastically due to the nice Spring weather we are having in the Ozarks and more and more interest is being generated through online promotions. Check the new page out at WWW.RIDEHULSTON.COM and be sure to look the events page over while you’re there. We have numerous organized events scheduled at the park throughout the coming year.
Spring Trail Rider’s Retreat
Memorial Day Weekend, May 29th. – 31st. Plan to join us for this year’s annual Spring ride at Hulston Mill Park. The campground will open for the event on Friday evening, May 28th., and last through the weekend. Admission fee of $15.00 per person will include camping Friday and Saturday nights, the organized portion of the ride, and a group feed followed by a dance on Saturday evening. Family admission package is $45.00 maximum per household. We’ll hold a campsite church service early Sunday morning for those wishing to attend and we'll have a play day Sunday afternoon. The main purpose for this event is to just get everyone together after the long winter refrain from riding and enjoy each other's company. There isn't a lot of organization that goes into the event and everything is kept rather laid back, so we hope to see everyone there this coming Memorial Day weekend for a fun and relaxing outing. You can download a flyer for the event from our web page at WWW.RIDEHULSTON.COM .
Camp Fee Payments Camping fees are $10.00 per night for electric sites and $5,00 per night for primitive camping. When you visit Hulston Mill Park these days you will notice that the donation box where you normally pay your fees has been relocated more conveniently along the driveway atop the hill on your way into the park. The donation box is now directly beneath the sign that lists camp fees at the park. Over the past few years fees have been paid on the honor system at Hulston Park utilizing the donation box which was formerly located near the center of the park. Many visitors have failed to find the donation box over the years and have left without paying their fees. Among the most honest of these visitors, were those who mailed their fees to us later or paid them during their next visit, but a lot of revenue has been lost from visitors camping and simply not paying. Relocating the donation box should alleviate the problem of not finding it and in some cases, discredit any excuses for being weekend squatters. Please be sure to stop at the donation box on your way in and fill out your registration envelope on the back and enclose your fees. Although it has been acceptable to pay any time prior to leaving the park in times past, pre-registration and pre-payment is now required. It is mandatory that your license plate number be listed on the envelope with your fees enclosed and in the donation box before you set up camp. Beginning this month (May, 2004) we will be conducting periodic checks so please remember to pre-register and pre-pay according to the length of time you plan to camp with us.

Very fast paced meeting. Lots of good stuff discussed. I will try to unofficially highlight some of the items discussed, however you will want to be sure and get the full details from your newsletter.
Club has 53 families, 131 members, with more members signing up since this count.
Trail Committee Report -
Trail committee passed out some info on the ride. Was also announced that there will be some options as to the length of the ride. The options are to either ride for about 2 - 2 1/2 hours, or to ride for about 4 1/2 hours.
The ride will be open to guests. Just need a head count by the April meeting.
Bring covered dish
Again, head count at April meeting.
Show Committee-
There is a conflict with our Fun Show of Sept 18th, with a Sho-Me show in Eldon. It was voted and approved to change our fun show to Sept 11 in order to free up members for both shows.
Awards Committee-
More details of the qualifications for the Horse of the Year were discussed. No one had any questions.
Awards committee also discussed year end participation awards for our equestrians aged 17 and under. Full details have not been determined and probably wont be disclosed as to make it a surprise for the kids. However they will be recognized at the end of the year dinner.
A bit of new business - A St Jude Benefit ride close to Branson was discussed. If the club is able to raise $1400 for the benefit, the club will receive a saddle which could be used for the Horse of the Year award. It was voted and approved that the club should try to work towards this. You need to turn in your donations by the April meeting in order to see where we stand and perhaps we might want to add to the funds by having a bake sale or something along these lines.
Along these same lines of Charities, other worthy causes and ideas were discussed as possibilities for future events, such as a show for charity, or a trail ride for charity. These will be discussed again at a later date, after we see how well received the May charity event is and how successful that is.
The trail at Marion was discussed, with the possibility and interest of starting a petition to reopen the trail to equestrians. Suggestions were made as to where to start and who to talk to in order to find out more information on how best to accomplish this.
Again, this is only a brief overview..... it was a great meeting, lots of discussion, lots of ideas, and you will want to be sure to read your newsletter when it comes out.

Totally unofficial recap of the meeting from the back of the room.
What a great meeting! Great discussion, Great participation, Great involvement.
As of this meeting, we have 50 families who have joined, for a total of 124 individual members.
Revisions to the by-laws were discussed, as well as the reasoning for the changes. It was voted by majority to accept the revisions.
One committee report-
Show Committee has met and received board approval for their show dates which are:
May 15, Fun Show
Sept 18, Fun show
July 31st, Sho-Me Show
While the trail committee had not formally met prior to the meeting, it had been discussed to have the spring trail ride on Mother's Day weekend. This tentative date was presented to the club and that weekend had no opposition.
Awards were discussed. There were many good ideas so the committee was re-organized as a Year-End Awards Committee.
It was re-emphasized that if you want to join a committee, please contact Cheri.
Also any suggestions can be emailed Maureen.
The club now has it's Tax Exempt Status. This will be reviewed every 4 years and we must maintain educational benefits to remain tax exempt, as well as other requirements.
A reminder was mentioned for the MEC Education Days on the 27th and 28th of February.
It was also mentioned that there will be a Mounted Cowboy Shoot at the Midway on the 28th and 29th of February.
Also, everyone expressed what a great time they had at the Appreciation Dinner.
