from Sho-Me Circuit President

Yesterday our show circuit had a generous donation of a APHC breeding stock weanling stud colt.  Harry Garner and Susan Wilderman generously donated this colt to the Sho Me Circuit to use for a fund raiser.  The colt was shown yesterday in our weanling futurity and placed third.  The colt is sired by AQHA stallion, Recurrence, who is a son of  "Ima Cool Skip" and owned by Danny Sommerer.  "Recurrence" was a 2003 World Show Finalist in Open and Amateur Halter and he has qualified for the 2004 AQHA World Show also.

We are selling the tickets for $1.00 each or 6 for $5.00.  The drawing date will be determined at our next Board Meeting in October and I will send out the details.  Please contact me if you are interested in purchasing tickets, you may be the lucky winner of this outstanding colt.

Thanks again to Harry Garner and Susan Wilderman for supporting the Sho Me Circuit in so many ways!

from our Parade Coordinator

Cynammon Renfrow's husband, Tony Rowles, has graciously offered to drive their pick-up truck in the parade tomorrow morning.  He is also going to have a trailer with straw/hay bales to sit on.

Please pass this information along to anybody that you think might want to participate in the parade but, for what ever reason(s), will not be riding a horse.  There should be plenty of room for whoever wants to ride!

See everybody bright & early.

Hello everyone!

Just a reminder the Saddle Club is going to participate in the Ham &
Turkey Festival Parade on Saturday, September 18.  We will begin lining
up at 8:00 a.m. at the Fairgrounds in California.  Judging takes place
at 8:30 a.m. and the parade starts at 9:00 a.m.

As a group, we will wear our club shirts - t-shirt or sweatshirt.  I
will have a supply of t-shirts at the fairgrounds if you would like to
purchase one.  Or you can wear a dark green/forest green shirt of your
own.  Let me know if you would like to purchase a shirt and what size
and I'll have them ready.

If you don't have a horse to ride, but would like to participate, we
are asking for a member to volunteer their pickup truck.  We'll put the
"horseless" members in the bed of the pickup truck and will ride behind
the Club banner and the horses will follow.

Last year, the Club took 1st Place in the Horse Category - let's make
it two in a row!!  Hope to see you on Saturday!

FYI - The Parade is worth 5 points for the Horse of the Year nominees.

Cheri

New Page Added, complete with the following Web-itorial

Pro-Helmet?

Of course I am pro-helmet.  Too many reasons not to be.  Mainly a spouse, 4 kids, 2 step-children, 4 grandkids, 2 more on the way yet this year, and hopefully more in the future... are just a few of my reasons for being Pro-Helmet.  Not to mention my own personal track record of falling off every other time I mounted during the first 10 months of riding as an adult.  (Thank goodness I didn't ride very often, but can you blame me?)  Granted, it was almost always my fault, not my horse's, but a fall just the same.

I am just now typing this web-itorial, along with devoting a special page to Safety Helmets, because I can just now take the splint off my arm and type it.  I was hunting and pecking one finger at a time, due to a broken arm which was the result of my horse falling on a straight flat section of trail, as safe as it gets, the Katy Trail outside of Sedalia.  Nothing spooked him, no holes to fall into, no obstacles of any kind, and less than one hour into our ride, he just simply fell at a lope.

Being catapulted through the air by a 1200 pound missile launcher, who subsequently somersaulted and landed next to me, you have a few moments to think.  Mostly I am thinking, "This is really going to be bad", along with a few other choice phrases I can not repeat on a family oriented website.  The last thing I saw before I went airborne, was my friend's 6 year old daughter in front of me--- watching--- and I really wished this was not happening at that moment.

After the dust settled,  I was thankful that I was able to feel the excruciating pain in my broken arm, because I knew my head had hit with some force, more than once.  Even though my helmet had seen better days, I was glad that I was still able to have my head and my thinking capacity in tact, and I was glad and thankful that I still had the ability to feel pain.  Nothing that an emergency surgery on a Sunday evening and a $10,000 hospital bill couldn't fix.

Even though wearing a helmet is pro-choice, there are too many documented reasons in support of being pro-helmet.  In my search to find such information to share with you here on the website, I was amazed by some of my findings such as:

  • Most riding injuries occur with experienced riders.

  • Adults ages 25 or older account for at least 54 percent of hospital treated rider injuries.

  • Head injuries are associated with more than 60 percent of equestrian related deaths.

  • Nearly 62 percent of reported injuries occurred at home or on a farm.

  • Head injuries may result in lowered attention span, distractibility, memory loss, decreased in speed of mental process, learning disabilities, lowering the I.Q., and acceleration of aging process.

Now I don't know about you, but I can not afford any more loss or decreases in the ole noggin department, certainly not any that I can prevent.

I hope that each one of you will take the time to click through to some of the links contained on the Helmets page.  If you’re one of those readers who do not  wear a helmet, I hope some of these articles will make you step back and re-think your decision. I hope each one of you will ask yourself this one question... What is YOUR head worth?

Use your Head, Wear a Helmet

From our Secretary:

Hello everyone

Looks like the weather is not willing to cooperate with us this
weekend.  Is this really August or April!?!  :-)

Here is the plan for the Showmanship Clinic!  The Clinic will take
place at

William Woods University
Fulton, Missouri
Sunday, August 29th
2:00 p.m.

They have the perfect set up for the clinic, bleachers and a roof!!!
However, we are unable to bring our own horses for the clinic and will
not be able to have the small "fun show" afterwards.

If you plan to attend the clinic, please let me know as soon as
possible by email or call me at home tonight or tomorrow morning
573-796-4751 - leave a message.  Karen Craighead would like a head count
from our group.

CAR POOL - I am willing to drive to Fulton and can take up to 6 people,
including myself in my van.  If there are any others who would be
willing to drive, please let me know as soon as possible.  We will meet
at Village Green parking lot around 12:30 p.m. and leave at 12:45 p.m.

If you see that I'm not sending this email to a member (because I don't
have their email address) who might be interested in coming to the
clinic, please pass on this information!

Don't forget . . . send me an email or give me a call if you plan to
attend the clinic!!!

FYI - For Horse of the Year candidates - the clinic is worth 5
points!!!

Have a great weekend!  Cheri

Additional Info:

we may have the clinic in their smaller arena and there is not a lot of
seating.

12:45 p.m. for Fulton if you want to car pool!

From K Bar A Arena, Kevin and Cheri Messerli-owners

There is a Benefit Team Penning planned for
Sunday, September 12 at the California Fairgrounds for Derek Ashal who
has been diagnosed with cancer.

We are rescheduling the first penning for September to September 19th
instead of the 12th.  The last penning will take place as planned on
September 26th.  We'll have back to back pennings.  On the 26th will
have the penning, BBQ and award the buckles.

Connie & Greg Bolinger are putting the team penning together along with
several others.  They had asked if we wanted to combine our penning with
theirs and we declined because of the points and buckles we're giving
away.  Kevin and I want to keep the 2 pennings separate.

Don't know the specifics of the benefit penning yet.  Connie asked if I
would help with the entries and announcing.  Once I get more
information, I'll pass it on.  This penning was announced at the MOTPA
finals last weekend at the State Fair, so it might draw a lot of outside
penners and turn out a nice crowd for the benefit.

If you have questions, give us call.

Have a great weekend!  Cheri & Kevin

Dixon Sho Me Show has been rescheduled for October 8th at 7:30pm.

Missouri Chapter of the American Trail Horse is hosting a trail ride on Sept. 18th at Lead Mine Conservation area.

Here is the directions for how to get to Lead Mine Conservation Area:

From Lebanon, take Hwy 64 west for aprox. 23 miles to Hwy T. Turn
north on Hwy T and follow for aprox. 9 miles to Hwy YY. Turn east,
(there's a sign) and go .5 mile to the entrance. Turn left into the
area. Follow road 2.2 miles to the equestrian campground on the
left.

There is 22 miles of riding in multiple loops. You will want to
make sure that your horse is shod because the terrain can be steep
and rocky.

You will also want to bring drinking water for yourself. There is
water at the camping area, but only for the horses.

If anyone has any other questions, you can ask here or e-mail me. I
can also e-mail anyone who's interested a map of the area. I will
also have maps available there. You can also get a pretty nice topo

Just a reminder a membership meeting is scheduled for this Thursday,
August 5th at 7:00 p.m. at Nic Nac Cafe.  Hope you can stop by for the
meeting before you head out to the Fair!

Our Club's Sho-Me Circuit Show was this past weekend and was very
successful - 278 entries and 52 4-H/FFA entries.  The weather was great and we received many compliments for a well run Show.  Many thanks to the club members who volunteered their time at the show and to the many sponsors.  If you get a chance, stop by Tucker's Tack Saddle and Fee and thank Jeff and Melinda for their HUGE donation to the Show.  Jeff and Melinda donated a prize for each 1st place winner in each class!

Mark your calendar for the following upcoming events:

September 11 - Fun Show - Moniteau County Fairgrounds

Dixon horse show has been rained out.  They will try to reschedule for an August date and will get back to me when a final date has been determined.  As of now the California show is still on for tomorrow.  We will check the condition of the arena this evening but we haven't had much rain in our area as of this morning.  Please spread the word to anyone you know that I may have missed sending an email too.

Thanks,

Subject: Missouri State Parks eFriends Newsletter - Special Issue July 2004

Hello, Missouri State Park eFriends

Welcome to a special issue of the electronic newsletter for Missouri State
Park eFriends. In this issue, we are letting you know about a special
opportunity to provide input about the state park system. I hope you will
take this opportunity to let us know your thoughts.

Doug Eiken, Director
Missouri Department of Natural Resources
Division of State Parks

State Park System Seeks Public Input

You can win a two-night stay at a Missouri state park by offering input on
what should be included in the Missouri state park system. The Missouri
Department of Natural Resources is seeking public input on identifying
missing state parks and historic sites in the state park system.

A 1992 plan identified notable gaps in the state park system where
particular natural, cultural and recreational resources were either not
represented or were underrepresented. The current survey seeks to
determine how successful the division has been in filling these gaps and
where gaps may still exist. The survey also provides opportunities to
voice any opinions about the standards used to establish and maintain the
state park system. Any potential new state park or historic site
identified in the survey must meet these standards and adequate resources
must be available to acquire and manage it.

The survey will take approximately half an hour to complete. Participants
who complete the survey are given the chance to enter a drawing to win a
two-night stay for two people at a state park motel or cabin. If you are
interested in participating in the survey, you can fill it out online at
www.mostateparks.com/survey.

from parade coordinator

Hello everyone!

We have a truck volunteered for the parade.  "Thank You" to Donna & Monte Cornett!  So if anybody can't or doesn't want to ride a horse in the parade, there is room on/in the pick-up truck.

We still need a couple volunteers to carry the Club banner.  If you wish to volunteer, let me know by e-mail or call me at 660-458-6618.  You don't have to have a partner to volunteer.  I will get somebody for the other side of the banner if 1 person says they will help out.

According to the newspaper, check-in for the parade will begin at 4:00 p.m. at the MFA Distribution Center on East Smith St., which is the street that runs along the Cargill Ball Fields.  We can gather on the hillside east of the fairgrounds around 4:00 & head up to Smith St. as a group by 4:30.

Hope to see all of you there.

Carolyn

from our secretary

Attached is a current list of sponsors for the Show this weekend.
Carolyn was able to get sponsors for the last 2 classes.  Thanks
Carolyn!!!

I will put together a poster size list of sponsors to hang up at the
registration desk.

Let's just keep our fingers, toes and whatever crossed that the rain
forecasted for Thursday night, Friday and Saturday disappears!!

From Parade Committee:

Hi Everybody,

This is to remind some & inform others that the club, as a group, is riding in the Moniteau County Fair parade.  The parade is on July 31st & starts at 5:00 p.m.  I ASSUME that it starts at the Cargill ball fields but I have to check on that for sure & let everybody know.

Since that is also the day of the club's Sho-Me Horse Show, we can collect our group at 4:00 p.m. at the fairgrounds & ride up to where the parade is starting.

Please wear your dark green club t-shirts, or a dark colored shirt if you have not gotten a club shirt, so we look like a group.

I also need 2 volunteers to carry the club banner in the parade.  These 2 will be walking  with the banner at the front of the group.  Last year for the Ham & Turkey Parade, Burgoons were kind enough to decorate their truck & let non-riders ride in the bed.  If anyone wants to loan their truck for that purpose, please let me know so we can make plans & let non-riders know that they can also be in the parade.

Also, for those interested, this is a club event so it does count as 5 points in the Horse of the Year contest.

We had a great turnout for the Ham & Turkey Parade.  Let's do it again for the Fair Parade.  Let's show the community that we are still going strong.  It is also only 7 days away, so please let me know soon if you are willing to be a banner carrier or offer your truck.

Thanks.  See you soon.

Carolyn Twardowski

P.S.  My e-mail address has changed since the club roster was printed.  For all who are interested, you may want to make the change on your roster for future reference.

Show-Me Missouri Back Country Horsemen Attains State Status

Durango, Colorado….Eldon Kriesel, Show-Me Missouri Back Country Horsemen Board Chairman returned from the Back Country Horsemen of America Annual National Meeting in Durango this past week with the news that SMMBCH was accepted as a state charter by a unanimous decision, having met all the requirements set forth in the bylaws of that organization.

The Dade County Historical Society joined Show-Me BCH in March of this year to support their efforts and we encourage all regional trail riders to consider joining the organization which unites equestrians and gives us a political voice to be heard by our political leaders at various levels of government; as well as helping to coordinate our cooperative efforts with land management agencies throughout the state.

SMMBCH has partnered with the Missouri Department of Conservation in it’s Adopt-A-Trail Program which has recently benefited the trails system at Hulston Mill Conservation Area with a workday to maintain trail system there. That workday was conducted by the Heart of the Ozarks Chapter of Show-Me Missouri Back Country Horsemen. Other workdays are planned at Hulston throughout the year.

For more information on Show-Me Missouri Back Country Horsemen and the events revolving around their newly achieved state status, please visit them on the Web at: WWW.SHOWMEBCH.ORG ..

Please Note: There will be a meeting of the Heart of the Ozarks Chapter of Show-Me Missouri Back Country Horsemen at Talbot Reserve on Saturday, May the 8th. at 11:00 A.M., at the stable barn which is located on Mo. Highway 96 just East of  Highway 97intersection (see map below). Anyone in the Southwest Missouri region who is interested in becoming members of SMMBCH, or is seeking further information about membership is cordially invited to attend. We are planning an afternoon trail ride following the meeting so pack your lunch and bring your horses. [Our sincere thanks to Mark Hutchings of the Department of Conservation for permitting us to use the stable and arena for this meeting.]

Web Page Changes at RideHulston.Com

Our web page address is about the only thing that remains the same at RideHulston.Com these days. We gave the page a new face lift to allow for faster page loading and to offer some new features to visitors. Traffic to our site has increased drastically due to the nice Spring weather we are having in the Ozarks and more and more interest is being generated through online promotions. Check the new page out at WWW.RIDEHULSTON.COM  and be sure to look the events page over while you’re there. We have numerous organized events scheduled at the park throughout the coming year.

Spring Trail Rider’s Retreat

Memorial Day Weekend, May 29th. – 31st. Plan to join us for this year’s annual Spring ride at Hulston Mill Park. The campground will open for the event on Friday evening, May 28th., and last through the weekend. Admission fee of $15.00 per person will include camping Friday and Saturday nights, the organized portion of the ride, and a group feed followed by a dance on Saturday evening. Family admission package is $45.00 maximum per household. We’ll hold a campsite church service early Sunday morning for those wishing to attend and we'll have a play day Sunday afternoon.

The main purpose for this event is to just get everyone together after the long winter refrain from riding and enjoy each other's company. There isn't a lot of organization that goes into the event and everything is kept rather laid back, so we hope to see everyone there this coming Memorial Day weekend for a fun and relaxing outing. You can download a flyer for the event from our web page at WWW.RIDEHULSTON.COM .

Camp Fee Payments

Camping fees are $10.00 per night for electric sites and $5,00 per night for primitive camping. When you visit Hulston Mill Park these days you will notice that the donation box where you normally pay your fees has been relocated more conveniently along the driveway atop the hill on your way into the park. The donation box is now directly beneath the sign that lists camp fees at the park.

Over the past few years fees have been paid on the honor system at Hulston Park utilizing the donation box which was formerly located near the center of the park. Many visitors have failed to find the donation box over the years and have left without paying their fees. Among the most honest of these visitors, were those who mailed their fees to us later or paid them during their next visit, but a lot of revenue has been lost from visitors camping and simply not paying. Relocating the donation box should alleviate the problem of not finding it and in some cases, discredit any excuses for being weekend squatters.

Please be sure to stop at the donation box on your way in and fill out your registration envelope on the back and enclose your fees. Although it has been acceptable to pay any time prior to leaving the park in times past,  pre-registration and pre-payment is now required. It is mandatory that your license plate number be listed on the envelope with your fees enclosed and in the donation box before you set up camp.

Beginning this month (May, 2004) we will be conducting periodic checks so please remember to pre-register and pre-pay according to the length of time you plan to camp with us.

The 3rd Annual Trail Ride and Barbecue Fundraiser is set for Saturday, April 17, 2004 at 10:00 AM at the Edgar Springs Saddle Club arena. We would like to invite all the surrounding saddle clubs and "horse people" to our trail ride and barbecue. We would be honored if you and your horse would join us for a great time.

The Edgar Springs Saddle Club and The Tri-County Center for Independent Living have teamed up again for the 3rd Annual Tri-County Trail Ride and Barbecue.

The Tri-County Center is a non-profit organization that helps those with disabilities lead a more independent life. They serve individuals in Phelps, Pulaski and Laclede counties in Missouri.

This year the trail ride will be 10 miles. We ask that each rider take pledges for each mile that they ride. Pledge sheets are available at local sponsors or at www.edgarspringssaddleclub.com

A barbecue with all the fixins will follow! If you don’t ride a horse, come on out to the barbecue anyway! The barbecue will be $5.00/person, which includes a drink. We’ll see y’all there.

1st, 2nd and 3rd place prizes for riders who raise the most money!

Please forward this e-mail to anyone you know that might be interested in participating.

Thanks!

Very fast paced meeting.  Lots of good stuff discussed.  I will try to unofficially highlight some of the items discussed, however you will want to be sure and get the full details from your newsletter.

Club has 53 families, 131 members, with more members signing up since this count.

Trail Committee Report -

  • Trail committee passed out some info on the ride.  Was also announced that there will be some options as to the length of the ride.  The options are to either ride for about 2 - 2 1/2 hours, or to ride for about 4 1/2 hours.

  • The ride will be open to guests.  Just need a head count by the April meeting.

  • Bring covered dish

  • Again, head count at April meeting.

Show Committee-

  • There is a conflict with our Fun Show of Sept 18th, with a Sho-Me show in Eldon.  It was voted and approved to change our fun show to Sept 11 in order to free up members for both shows.

Awards Committee-

  • More details of the qualifications for the Horse of the Year were discussed.  No one had any questions.

  • Awards committee also discussed year end participation awards for our equestrians aged 17 and under.  Full details have not been determined and probably wont be disclosed as to make it a surprise for the kids.  However they will be recognized at the end of the year dinner.

A bit of new business - A St Jude Benefit ride close to Branson was discussed.  If the club is able to raise $1400 for the benefit, the club will receive a saddle which could be used for the Horse of the Year award.  It was voted and approved that the club should try to work towards this.  You need to turn in your donations by the April meeting in order to see where we stand and perhaps we might want to add to the funds by having a bake sale or something along these lines.

Along these same lines of Charities, other worthy causes and ideas were discussed as possibilities for future events, such as a show for charity, or a trail ride for charity.  These will be discussed again at a later date, after we see how well received the May charity event is and how successful that is.

The trail at Marion was discussed, with the possibility and interest of starting a petition to reopen the trail to equestrians.  Suggestions were made as to where to start and who to talk to in order to find out more information on how best to accomplish this.

Again, this is only a brief overview..... it was a great meeting, lots of discussion, lots of ideas, and you will want to be sure to read your newsletter when it comes out.

Totally unofficial recap of the meeting from the back of the room.

What a great meeting!  Great discussion, Great participation, Great involvement.

As of this meeting, we have 50 families who have joined, for a total of 124 individual members.

Revisions to the by-laws were discussed, as well as the reasoning for the changes.  It was voted by majority to accept the revisions.

One committee report-

Show Committee has met and received board approval for their show dates which are:

  • May 15, Fun Show

  • Sept 18, Fun show

  • July 31st, Sho-Me Show

While the trail committee had not formally met prior to the meeting, it had been discussed to have the spring trail ride on Mother's Day weekend.  This tentative date was presented to the club and that weekend had no opposition.

Awards were discussed.  There were many good ideas so the committee was re-organized as a Year-End Awards Committee.

It was re-emphasized that if you want to join a committee, please contact Cheri.

Also any suggestions can be emailed Maureen.

The club now has it's Tax Exempt Status.  This will be reviewed every 4 years and we must maintain educational benefits to remain tax exempt, as well as other requirements.

A reminder was mentioned for the MEC Education Days on the 27th and 28th of February.

It was also mentioned that there will be a Mounted Cowboy Shoot at the Midway on the 28th and 29th of February.

Also, everyone expressed what a great time they had at the Appreciation Dinner.

Article concerning Animal ID

INSIGHT INTO THE USAIP
Posted by Anthony Corban 10:50 AM 15-Jan-2004 NZST

Many in the horse industry are learning of the United States Animal Identification Plan (USAIP or the Plan) and they are naturally concerned about what it means to horse owners.

Unfortunately some of the information that is being circulated about the USAIP and its potential impact on the horse industry is misunderstood or inaccurate.

For instance some believe that the Plan requires all horses to have an identifying ear tag by 2006.

This is not true.

In addition the deadlines set out in the USAIP are for when a numbering system should be in place and possibly applicable to cattle and swine but not horses or other livestock.

In fact, the Plan does not apply to horses now, although it does include a blank section for horses that can be fleshed out in the future.

The American Horse Council (AHC) is very familiar with the USAIP and has been monitoring its development for some time.

The AHC has organised a task force, which includes 32 national equine organisations, to evaluate the USAIP and determine if the horse industry could develop standards for equine identification that would benefit the industry and be compatible with the USAIP.

The United States Trotting Association's registrar, Bob Luehrman, is a member of the task force.

Information about the plan and its potential effect on the horse industry is available at the AHC Web site at www.horsecouncil.org.

The USAIP has been developed by a team representing many of the nation's major animal agriculture industries.

These individuals came together because they believe that the ability to trace animals quickly in the event of an outbreak of a major animal disease is vital to ensuring the continued operation and viability of our enormous animal agriculture industry.

Some of the animal agriculture organisations involved include the Livestock Marketing Association, the National Cattlemen's Beef Association, National Milk Producers Federation, the National Pork Producers Council and the American Sheep Industry.

The United States Department of Agriculture has also lent expertise to the group.

This group, originally known as the United States Animal Identification Working Group, was formed out of concern about the destruction that diseases such as Foot And Mouth Disease (FMD), Hog Cholera and BSE (Mad Cow Disease) might have on the United States livestock industry.

These industries recognised the destruction such diseases had inflicted on many of our nation's trading partners.

Now with a major sector of the United States livestock industry reeling from the diagnosis of a BSE-positive cow in Washington State and in Canada, the need for accurate, rapid, individual animal identification has shown to be vital.

Especially for tracing the origin and movement of diseased and/or exposed animals and in containing, controlling and eradicating the disease.

The USAIP is intended to establish a standardised, alpha-numeric system for animal identification.

The purpose of such a system is to permit trace back within 48 hours of a confirmed diagnosis of an animal disease such as FMD or BSE.

Ensuring animal health in the United States, and thereby our ability to market our animals, is the primary reason the animal agriculture industry is looking at a national, standardised identification system.

As mentioned, the USAIP does not have a section on Equine ID at this time, although a place has been reserved for standards of equine identification.

The AHC is working with our member organisations through our National Equine Identification Task Force to evaluate the plan and its benefit to the horse industry and to determine if the industry could develop standards for equine identification that would fit into the USAIP.

The American Horse Council will continue to follow the implementation of the USAIP by other livestock sectors and our National Equine Identification Task Force will work to determine the role that the horse industry should have in the process.
